The Book of Tobit

The main characters in the book of Tobit are Tobit, Tobiah, Sarah, Anna, and Raphael.

Tobit was a very righteous man who performed many charitable works for his kinsmen and his people. When he grew up to be an adult he married a woman named Anna with whom he had a son named Tobiah. During Shalameneser's reign as king, Tobit always fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and he buried the dead. When Shalameneser found out about this, he was angry and wanted Tobit killed. Tobit fleed and was safe. Then he returned to Ninevah under the King Esarhaddon. Tobit prayed that he wouldn't be killed, as did Sarah, when she was falsely accused. Both were saved by God because of their love for Him.

Tobit's son, Tobiah, was then asked by his father to go on a journey to Media. Tobit wouldn't let his son go on the journey alone so Tobiah went to find someone to pay to have them come along on the trip. He came across what he thought was just a young man, that was really Raphael, an angel of God. Later on, Raphael instructed Tobiah to marry Sarah. Tobiah was afraid to marry Sarah because she was married seven times before. Not only that, every man she was about to marry died on the wedding day. Tobiah also heard that it was a demon who killed them. He is his parent's only child so he wouldn't want to die because it would put his parents into great sorrow.

Tobiah wanted to go visit his parents and let them know that he was he was ok. Tobiah asked his father-in law to allow him to go. Raguel said it was ok and gave him half of Tobiah's property. It included male and female slaves, oxen and sheep, asses and camels, clothing, money, and household goods. On the way to his father's house Raphael and Tobiah went ahead of his wife and the rest of the people to meet his mother and father. Tobit, who is blind, wondered out to greet him. Raphael told Tobiah how to cure his father's blindless. Tobiah walked up to his father and blew into his eyes. Then he smeared the medicine in the corner of his eyes and then peeled of the skin. Raphael revealed to Tobiah and Tobit that he was one of seven angels of God and that God had sent him to watch over Tobiah. Raphael told them to always pray and sing praises to God then disappeared.Tobiah died at the age of 117.

Moral: Trust God and he will protect you.
